Re: [docbook] Docbook suggestions

Chris:

On his website, Norm Walsh discusses the possible integration of DocBook and TEI (see http://norman.walsh.name/2003/10/09/dei).  TEI is expressly designed for literary texts.  And Sebastian Rahtz has designed stylesheets that transform TEI documents into FO, which then permits the use of TeX/LaTeX at the back-end (see http://www.tei-c.org/Software/passivetex/).  So, what you suggest would be possible, more or less, if this integration were to occur.

In the meantime, you may wish to look at LaTeX (particularly, the Memoir and Koma-Script packages) or ConTeXt as alternatives to XML-oriented solutions. See www.tug.org, www.ctan.org, and www.pragma-ade.com/.

Subject: [docbook] Docbook suggestions
Priority: Normal

For the last year or so, I've been putting docbook to a use I don't think it was intended for: writing a novel.  Of course, the "book->chapter->sect1->...->para" hierarchy doesn't really express the structure of a novel very well -- something like "book->chapter->scene->para."  I've been mapping "scene" to "sect1", "skip"s to "sect2," etc.  This works fairly well, but the semantic tags don't really match the elements, which, after all, is the whole purpose of docbook.

So, DocBook Technical Committee, is there any chance of adding a "novel" hierarchy to the existing "technical document" hierarchy?
