It looks what what you are trying to do should work.
Perhaps you could also show us what your files named "contents.xml" and
"common/entites.xml" contain.

Regarding setting the 'bibliography.numbered' parameter, you don't need to
edit the xsl files in your distribution.  You want to create a customization
layer. See:
