Follow eCosians:
I have a custom 5 board CompactPCI system (every
board built custom, right down to the backplane).
This system is just SBC w/FLASH&SDRAM,
2GB of SDRAM mass buffer, and some exotic
interfaces (1553, funky fiber, a proprietary serial
interface, CAN bus, ...). No disk, no network,
no user interface - Its a main data computer
for an experiment on the International Space Station.
Right now we are running a fairly recent LINUX on
this system, wringing out the wiring bugs.
I am interested in exploring the use of a lighter
weight OS to implement the application when
we are done with this testing phase. To get up to
speed on eCos I have played a fair amount with
eCos on a ARM platform so I know it is up to
snuff for what I need.
I have not however learned much about the
internals of eCos and have no feeling about
the level of difficulty of doing a hal port.
I have seen some chatter in the archives about
how easy it would be to cobble up an eCos for
the PowerPC 740 based on the eCos 860 code:

Does anyone have suggestions or comments?
Is the 860 port still the place to start?
Anyone have a better starting point they would like
to share?
I know there is plenty of for pay support available,
this is an option, but a distant one. This is an
academic project and there is more sweat than
cash.
