Getting started with JFFS2

A couple of questions.
When I try to mount a jffs2 file system, where none exists, I get many error messages (O.K. I expect that) that start at address 0x00000000. In the .ecc file, I specify that block device starts at offset 0x00240000. Am I just reading the message incorrectly or is jffs2 trying to start at address 0?
It's a bit inconvenient to load the test image at this time. Can I just 'format' a block of memory. If so, how?
Is there example code out there to get started? The notes on Redhat's site seem a bit dated.
