"/dev/ttydiag" and "/dev/ser" questions

Hi everyone,

I need some clarification on /dev/ttydiag. In .ecc files I see
the string "/dev/ttydiag" as the default value for
CYGDAT_IO_SERIAL_TTY_CONSOLE and CYGDAT_LIBC_STDIO_DEFAULT_CONSOLE.

Does "/dev/ttydiag" simply refer to the diagnostic port on the board as
configured by RedBoot?

Also I have read in previous discussions that sometimes people have
changed CYGDAT_IO_SERIAL_TTY_CONSOLE to something like "/dev/tty*" and set
CYGPKG_IO_SERIAL_TTY_TTY* to "/dev/serx".

The string "/dev/serx" refers to a physical serial port, right? Does
/dev/serX have to be assigned to serial port X somewhere? Or does the
configtool know which serial port is being referred by the string alone?
