RFC: C/C++ preprocessor macro support for GDB

The following patch adds support for C/C++ preprocessor macros to GDB.
It's tentative:

- There are no ChangeLog entries.
- It's not broken up into relatively independent changes.
- There's no documentation.
- There are no tests.
- There are some unimplemented features.

I'll put it in proper form and re-post it soon, but I'm putting it out
now in hopes that folks will try it out and send me bug reports and
suggestions.

The patch reads Dwarf 2 macro information, which GCC doesn't currently
generate. (In fact, I don't know if any compiler generates it at the
moment.) I've tested it against some hand-written ".debug_macinfo"
sections, which I'll post in the next message. So it's not actually
useful yet.

Macro invocations in C/C++ expressions are expanded before evaluation.
GDB handles macros being #undefined and re-#defined, and uses the
#definitions in effect at whatever source line whose scope we're
evaluating the expression in.

The patch also provides a "macro expand" command, which lets you see
what an expression expands to, and a "show macro" command, which shows
you a macro's #definition, and says where in the sources that
#definition occured.

So the debugger side of pre-processor macro support is pretty much
done. I hope someone in GCC-land gets the itch and adds the
compiler-side support needed.

Shortcomings:

- Instead of using libcpp, this patch includes a newly-written macro
expander. It seems to work fine, but this is still a bug. But
beware, GDB has some weird requirements: you can't just preprocess
the whole expression at once, and then parse it. (I can explain
that in more detail if anyone is interested; see the comments the
  patch adds to c-lang.c.)

But the newly-written macro expander is well-separated from the rest
of GDB, via a pretty simple interface, so it should be easy to rip
out and replace with something better. I'd love to see a patch to
  do it.

- The way I've kludged the C/C++ expression parser to use the macro
expander is less than ideal, but I don't see any obviously better
way to do it. This relates to the difficulties hinted at above.

- The newly-written macro expander doesn't support stringification
(the prefix `#' operator), token splicing (the infix `##' operator),
or variable-arity function-like macros. They should be easy to add.

One is tempted to say, "Oh, libcpp handles all that, let's just
replace the newly-written expander with libcpp, rather than putting
more effort into the newly-written one." That's fine, but I suspect
it may take a while to work through the problems hinted at above, so
I wouldn't reject patches to fix these omissions.

- GDB is supposed to look at the compilation unit die to find its
macro info. But I didn't want to mess around with editing the Dwarf
2 .debug_info section in the assembly output by hand; it's full of
absolute byte offsets, and I'm sure I'd munge it. So there's a
kludge in dwarf2read.c that just treats the entire .debug_macinfo
section as the macro information for every compilation unit. The
proper code is there, #if 0'd out and untested.

- There are some cool commands in there that are sketched out, but not
  implemented.

- I have the feeling that, if we do adapt GCC to emit Dwarf 2 macro
information, the executables will be simply enormous, due to the
same header files being #included into all the compilation units.
GDB's data structures should handle this fine; it uses a bcache to
store only one copy of each unique string per executable file.
There are some tricks I think we used to compress the C++ info that
we may be able to adapt to handle this problem as well. (i.e., we
need to adapt DW_FORM_strp to the .debug_macinfo section.)

Here's the patch in action, using the test file I'll post next:

(gdb) break foo
Breakpoint 2 at 0x8048406: file test.c, line 8.
(gdb) run
Starting program: /home/jimb/gdb/macros/play/macros3

Breakpoint 1, main (argc=1, argv=0xbfffd014) at test.c:15
15	  printf ("Hello, world!\n");
(gdb) show macro FOO
Defined at /usr/include/stdio.h:2
  included at /home/jimb/gdb/macros/play/test.c:4
#define FOO(a, b) (a-b)
(gdb) print FOO(20,10)
$1 = 10
(gdb) macro expand FOO(20,10)
expands to: (20-10)
(gdb) c
Continuing.
Hello, world!

Breakpoint 2, foo () at test.c:8
8	  printf ("Nice to meet you!\n");
(gdb) show macro smootz
Defined at /home/jimb/gdb/macros/play/test.c:5
#define smootz() 42
(gdb) print smootz()
$2 = 42

However, the macro `smootz' gets #undef'ed, and then re-#defined later
at line 11. If we go up the stack to main, then the latter
#definition is in scope:

(gdb) up
#1 0x0804843b in main (argc=1, argv=0xbfffd014) at test.c:16
16	  foo ();
(gdb) show macro smootz
Defined at /home/jimb/gdb/macros/play/test.c:11
#define smootz(a) a+42
(gdb) print smootz(19)
$3 = 61
(gdb)

If you're reading the patch, I'd recommend starting with macrotab.h first,
then macroexp.h.

+ /* When we find that lexptr (the global var defined in parse.c) is
+ pointing at a macro invocation, we expand the invocation, and call
+ scan_macro_expansion to save the old lexptr here and point lexptr
+ into the expanded text. When we reach the end of that, we call
+ end_macro_expansion to pop back to the value we saved here. The
+ macro expansion code promises to return only fully-expanded text,
+ so we don't need to "push" more than one level.
+
+ This is disgusting, of course. It would be cleaner to do all macro
+ expansion beforehand, and then hand that to lexptr. But we don't
+ really know where the expression ends. Remember, in a command like
+
+ (gdb) break *ADDRESS if CONDITION
+
+ we evaluate ADDRESS in the scope of the current frame, but we
+ evaluate CONDITION in the scope of the breakpoint's location. So

+ /* How do we represent a source location? I mean, how should we
+ represent them within GDB; the user wants to use all sorts of
+ ambiguous abbreviations, like "break 32" and "break foo.c:32"
+ ("foo.c" may have been #included into several compilation units),
+ but what do we disambiguate those things to?
+
+ - Answer 1: "Filename and line number." (Or column number, if
+ you're picky.) That's not quite good enough. For example, the
+ same source file can be #included into several different
+ compilation units --- which #inclusion do you mean?
+
+ - Answer 2: "Compilation unit, filename, and line number." This is
+ a pretty good answer; GDB's `struct symtab_and_line' basically
+ embodies this representation. But it's still ambiguous; what if a
+ given compilation unit #includes the same file twice --- how can I
+ set a breakpoint on line 12 of the fifth #inclusion of "foo.c"?
+
+ - Answer 3: "Compilation unit, chain of #inclusions, and line
+ number." This is analogous to the way GCC reports errors in
+ #include files:
+
+ $ gcc -c base.c
+ In file included from header2.h:8,
+ from header1.h:3,
+ from base.c:5:
+ header3.h:1: parse error before ')' token
+ $
+
+ GCC tells you exactly what path of #inclusions led you to the
+ problem. It gives you complete information, in a way that the
+ following would not:
+
+ $ gcc -c base.c
+ header3.h:1: parse error before ')' token
+ $
+
+ Converting all of GDB to use this is a big task, and I'm not really
+ suggesting it should be a priority. But this module's whole
+ purpose is to maintain structures describing the macro expansion
+ process, so I think it's appropriate for us to take a little care
+ to do that in a complete fashion.
+
+ In this interface, the first line of a file is numbered 1, not 0.
+ This is the same convention the rest of GDB uses. */
