I agree, this would make the most sense.
However, I don't see how to reasonably modify find_g77 to do this. I
could add a check for [which gfortran] to the not-remote-host case, but
I don't know how to search $PATH on a remote host.
I'm also not sure if searching $PATH is ok here at all.
