I'm checking this in. This patch hasn't changed since the original post.
I ran the whole test suite this way and fixed all the issues.
Note that I moved this patch earlier in the series.
It is independent of all the other patches; but I wanted to check the
last few patches in as a group, because they aren't actually meaningful
in isolation.
