This problem does not exist on redhat 7.2 for either gdb 5.1.92
or 5.1.1.
Upgrading the kernel on my redhat6.2 box from 2.2.14-5.0
to 2.2.19-6.2.16 gets gdb to work as well, so this bug can be
closed and have "upgrade the kernel" be the workaround.
