 I can't close this yet, alas.

 The build works for me, but three of the patch bits have not
 been applied yet and need to be.  These are bits in:

   ltcf-c.sh
   ltcf-gcj.sh
   ltmain.sh

 They must be in code that doesn't execute on my machine,
 because 'head -1' definitely fails for me now.

 I will keep working on this.
