This is not a bug in GDB afterall. The problem is caused by having a
stripped libpthread. My distribution (Gentoo) strips this file when
emerging glibc.
If anyone comes across this PR, here's how to emerge glibc in Gentoo
w/out stripping it:
$> FEATURES=nostrip emerge glibc
