It seems that the transfer of the file:
ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gdb/gdb-6.1.1.tar.bz2
Stops at ~5MB (it is normally a ~12MB file) and connections time out. I came across this as a broken (half-downloaded) file has been picked up by all Gentoo mirrors. See:
