basic debugging functions

I was wondering if there is a library or some part of
GDB that I could reuse (portabily) in my code. For
example, I would like to be able to dump a stack trace
on demand. I've seen some documents on libgdb, but
they were old and I'm not sure if it will do what I
want it to. Any help or pointers is greatly
appreciated.
