I've also just noticed that the code I had in the original comment for %%
actually is for any character that's not a format specifier.
The code for %% was actually:
case '%':
/* Match the `%' character itself. */
match_char ('%', *rp++);
break;
but the concept still stands, re the advancement of the rp pointer.
