i had pretty much the exact same problem. i couldn't link anything in
c++ (because of a 'missing libstdc++.so.8') and couldn't compile egcs or
the older libg++ packs; also a couple of programs wouldn't run. finally i
had a friend with the same kernel and glibc as i compile it 4me; i
untarred the file in2 a directory after he did all the configure/make
stuff, and did a make install. and since then somehow it's all been cool.
as4 what's causing it, i did all possible tweaking and couldn't
find anything. however, i didn't do any serious scrutinizing 4the source
of the dilemma, and i'm sorry to say i can't remember any of the
compiler's errors, only that when i linked c++ programs it'd say libstdc++
not found (when it was in my LD_... path). sorry i probably wasn't a lot
of help bugwise...good luck. later bj
