Oops.  I see I wasn't being that observant.  That's one mystery solved.  
Darn #ifdef's and #define's, so tricky.  ;-)

Don't know why the sh-utils developers didn't tell me I was being a dolt, and
that they were using getutent(), would have spared me the further 
embarrassment.  Oh well, live and learn.
