This implies that you're updating from libc5 to glibc2, right?
The glibc2-HowTo advices AFAIK to write a simple hello world program
to check that everything is ok. Since you don't seem to look at the
perl program and investigate why it fails, I advise to follow the
glibc2-HowTo. Some useful compiler flags are -Wl,-V or -Wall or -v.
Those should help you to see why gcc barfs.
