I think that depends on what version of the kernel. 2.0.X should use
gcc-2.7.x. Kernels 2.2.X and greater should compile fine with the latest
gcc variants (eg. egcs-1.1.1, egcs-1.1.2, gcc-2.95, gcc-2.95.1,
gcc-2.95.2).
