The conflict was finally tracked down to a bug in g++. Basically, both
gcc-2.95.2 and the recent snapshots fail to correctly build
libstc++ when high optimization flags are specifed; the default flags
give a functional library. Somehow, the bug in libstc++ leads to a
SIGSEGV in glibc (both 2.1.2 and 2.1.3pre3), but as far as I can tell,
glibc is ok by itself.
