Thanks for reporting that bug. Hmm, yes, it is all a bit mixed up.

The code is looking for the error message as the third argument, with
the second argument being an 'action-if-found' command. The following
line should work,

  AM_PATH_GSL(0.6.0,[],AC_MSG_ERROR(Error message!))

The x.y.z style number is required in the first argument at the
moment, but I'll generalize it to allow "x.y" and fix the
documentation.
