I just compared with scsh-0.5.0 and am no longer worried about this:
the existing read-line appears to be twice as fast as scsh's.  But it
can be made much faster (twice as fast again in the hair I posted
earlier), so I'll keep experimenting.  We may be able to achieve high
performance without sacrificing compatibility.
