wait-condition-variable & select

Hi,

Just again two question about wait-condition-variable & select. I hope
I will not nerv you...

 - Why are there two different concepts for a similar problem?

 - How can I unify this? I need a way to wait at the same time for a
   change of a conditional variable and for a change on a port.

It's for a simple message queue thread, connected to a socket.
