Jim had excellent comments on this issue a while back when he first
proposed this solution. For people interested, I reccomend searching
for #f in the Guile online archive index and looking for a thread with
a name like "#f vs. '() vs. nil". Jim presented a solution that is
IMO workable, if not perfect, and a good rationale.
