It allows you to build scientific applications out of building blocks and combine them in a CAD-like editor. It is also possible to define a model in a tcl script. Building blocks can be implemented in either C++ or Java. IMO it shouldn't be difficult to add guile as another implementation or modeling language. Ptolemy is a very big system and it's very nice.
