I've glanced at the code for this in STALIN, and it's pretty sophisticated. After talking to Siskind, he's both agreed and jumped the corporate hurdles required to get STALIN GPLed, so the code will soon be freely available. I've also written a much simpler one for GnuCash, but it's still in the early stages, and I might just end up stealing the one in STALIN (or the one posted later in this thread :>).
