I now use several applications every day that have Guile embedded. One 
of them (scwm) ends up executing some scheme literally every time I
move my mouse from one window to another. I'd say that Guile isn't in
much danger of dying -- it is now, in fact, starting to take off.

I would agree, though, that it would be good to get 1.3 out the door
-- it has been too long.
