I like it all except the 'instead of calling configure'.  Some of the
gtk/glib/gnome autogen scripts call configure, and some don't, and I much
prefer the ones that don't.  Being able to compile multiple object trees from
one source tree is too big a benefit to be given up to avoid one command line
(and the one that everybody already knows, at that!).
