Subject: Sourceware migration to new box, planned downtime this Friday

Well, time to move.

I've got basic the ftp and web services set up new system. Over the
next week I'll be getting the rest set up. On Friday afternoon, if I
can get the assistance of Marc, I'm going to take sourceware+egcs down.
We'll swap the IP#s of the old and new box, and I will copy all of the
data over to the new machine. When copying is done, I'll start up all
the services again.

This will all happen starting at 4pm PST (11pm UTC if I'm not mistaken).
Expect two to three hours of downtime, possibly a bit more.

Instead of just copying everything as-is, I'm reorganizing the filesystem
layout and I'm tweaking the way permissions are granted a bit[1]. I won't
have time to do a really thorough shakedown of the new setup; I anticipate
that I'll make a few mistakes. I'll pick those up over the weekend.

[1] Unix's security model is lame, I want a good implementation of ACLs.

Friday evening - Sunday is the most quiet period for sourceware+egcs,
so it won't be the end of the world if things are a little wonky.
Monday morning is one of the busiest periods for sourceware, so I plan
to have it all worked out before then.

You may want to notify your users of this downtime later this week.

You could also remind people that they should be using a CVSROOT of the
form :pserver:anoncvs@anoncvs.cygnus.com:/cvs/FOO for anonymous CVS
access. I'll probably drag my heels on this, but eventually that old
system is going to become anoncvs.cygnus.com and we're going to push off
anoncvs users to this separate system.

Guile people should all be reminded to use /cvs/guile instead of the
old CVSROOT where it used to be a subdir of EGCS. EGCS users should all
be reminded to use the /cvs/egcs (or /cvs/gcc if we're going to bite it
and swap over) instead of the old /egcs/carton style CVSROOT.
