Me too. I use it very often, and think Emacs' text console support is
essential.

The reason has to do with two things: simplicity and the basic need of
a text editor.
While your statement is true generally, there will *always* be special
occasions where you only have access to a simple character stream
connection, and it can be so great to be able to run Emacs in those
situations. I'm thinking of situations like trying to get X working
on a new machine, working with an embedded system, etc.
I would be very surprised if the telnet protocol wasn't still in use
in certain situations ten years from now.
