It's part of the reference manual, too :)
I think the manual defines the API.

Because they are useful and I'll use them, as long as there is no better
alternative.  It's better if they are well documented.  If there are
some problems with using snarf macros, such as debugging troubles you
mentioned, then the manual should also mention that.
