I'm guessing that the gcj regression that Per referred to is #2388:

"java/2388: Cannot compile libgcj on case insensitive file system?"

That bug is shown as closed.  But it has either reappeared or is a 
bigger problem than was understood at the time.  I notice that the 
particular point in the make where the failure occurs appears to have 
changed.

I'm wondering whether a workaround would be to arrange to have a 
case-sensitive filesystem.  I think that you can do that with Samba:
