Since you use Emacs, you might like to try the Kawa swank server
bundled in the SLIME contributed modules.
I haven't used it much myself and it does require the Oracle JVM with
debugging support, but perhaps the user-interface (SLIME) will be more
suitable for you.
Another common method is to run Kawa from the shell with the rlwrap
program. This affords you line editing and some history recall.
