   That's precisely what I'm doing.  The problem is that the thing
   doesn't want to compile, or doesn't pass "make check", and people keep
   telling me I shouldn't be compiling it instead of giving some kind of
   hint as to what might be wrong.

Use a debugger to find out, if you don't know how to use one, don't
mess with glibc.  It is a evil beast.
