IA64 libc.so always depends on libunwind?

When I built glibc with gcc 3.4 and libunwind 0.96, I got

# ldd libc.so
        /lib/ld-linux-ia64.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux-ia64.so.2 (0x2000000000000000)
        libunwind-ia64.so.1 => /usr/lib/libunwind-ia64.so.1 (0x2000000000040000)

Is that intentional?

H.J.
