Why doesn't the standard gcc compile newlib 1.9.0

Ok, after days of working, and thanks to Mumit Khan, I got newlib 1.9.0 and
gcc 2.95.2-6 to compile as a cross-compiler.

host=i686-pc-cygwin32
target=motorola-eabi

In the process I found out that using the 2.95.2 compiler fails (at a PPC
endian test) and the 2.95.2-6 works. Has anyone else seen this behaviour?

Is there anyway to know if the "-6" changes have been moved back into the
gcc cvs tree?
