The difference between automake-1.9.5 and 1.9.6 should be marginal.

automake-1.10 (+autoconf-2.60) probably would make a real difference to
newlib, because these support a substantially improved magic to handle
*.S (subdir-objects, full dep-tracking, a slightly different handling of
CCASFLAGS/CPPASFLAGS).

I would expect newlib to significantly profit from these change
(rtems's configuration at least does).
