2004 Campaign E-Update

As we now begin the second half of the 108th Congress, I want to take a moment to report on several issues that are at the top of the agenda.

When I was honored to be elected as Congressman from the 7th District of Tennessee I pledged to you that I would support realistic, long-term solutions to the complex problems that face our nation.

Too many times in the past few decades our elected officials have advocated for a "quick fix", especially in election years.  This is not leadership and it doesn't solve problems.  Fortunately we've already begun taking the long view on issues critical to our nation.  Last year we passed a comprehensive Medicare bill with private sector reforms that will encourage competition and cost reductions.

This year we continue waging a war on terrorism. Iraq and Afghanistan are now the front lines in this war and we must keep it that way. The alternative is another September 11th.  I have been to Iraq.  I have met with our military leadership in Iraq and our military men and women. They are in a tough position, but let me assure you that they are confident, they are prepared, and they are winning day by day. The President has made tough decisions, and that is what it's going to take to win this war on terrorism.

Economic growth continues to outpace expectations at a rate of six percent over the past six months.  The across the board tax cuts are working to fuel growth. This year we must make this tax relief permanent and keep the fuel on the fire.

Federal spending remains a serious problem.  As Vice-Chairman of the Government Reform Subcommittee on Government Efficiency and Financial Management I have heard all the excuses as to why we have cost overruns, automatic funding increases, and plain old fraud, and abuse.  I plan on working with my conservative colleagues to lead a systematic attack on the rampant spending problem.  That is the only way to make progress.

One quick note on a question I get a lot.  There is no doubt we are a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of laws. Immigration needs to continue in a fair, systematic and orderly manner. That does not mean our borders should be left unprotected. I oppose amnesty for illegal aliens.

As always it is an honor to serve you. If I can be of service in any way please don't hesitate to call.

Please note the attached invitation to our Women of Distinction luncheon featuring Congresswoman Katherine Harris.

 Thank you.
