Ah, I see.  It is because I have
    *font: -adobe-courier-medium-r-normal--18-0-0-0-m-0-iso8859-1
in ~/.Xdefaults.  If I change it to "fixed", things work.

Alternately, if I manually resize the window, I can see "world size".

But I was playing for months before I even knew the button was there.

Good practice for users with poor eyesight would discourage
disregarding the user's choice of font.  But I guess we already do in
the main game....
