In those screenshots, it is barely visible. It's pretty much a
nonissue until you zoom out (for example, in the standard game I find
it often useful to have the whole world visible when the other side(s)
move - one can still see where the action is happening).

That's an improvement. It is less saturated.

No objection to user settable (and/or settable in the GDL), but that
doesn't eliminate the need for good defaults.
