</xsl:variable>
<xsl:value-of select="substring($x,1,1000)"/>
you'll need to modify the select="TextItemText" to pick up all the text
from whichever node you evaluate this expression.
the string value of the result tree template is the concatenation of all
the element content, and then you can take the first 1000 characters
from that.
