name of current node, with namespace prefix, if any:
<xsl:value-of select="name(.)"/>
name of current node, without prefix:
<xsl:value-of select="local-name(.)"/>
These will probably work without the '.'. You could put some other
node-set identifying XPath expression in there if you wanted some other
node's name.
These will probably not work in IE5 with the stock MSXML parser, if that's
what you are using and failed to mention.
