Yes, but, can you have a xsl stylesheet applied to one of these "entitied"
files and produce another xml file that consists of the original files
together (xml + xml) --[xsl]--> xml :
xml file #1
-----------
<author>
<name>...
<publisher>...
</author>
xml file #2
-----------
<plant>
<scientificname>
<location>
</plant>
combined xml document (authors-and-plants.xml)
---------------------
<!DOCTYPE apage [
<!ENTITY banner SYSTEM "authors.xml">
<!ENTITY content SYSTEM "plants.xml">
]>
xsl file
--------
<... code that I'm curious about .......>
xsl output from combined-xml-document
-------------------------------------
<author>
<name>...
<publisher>...
</author>
<plant>
<scientificname>
<location>
</plant>
---------------------------------------------------------
This xsl code would overwrite authors-and-plants.xml but not the original
xml documents, authors.xml and plants.xml.
Thanks,
John

you want to use ENTITYs:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE apage [
<!ENTITY banner SYSTEM "sections/banner/b_xx_0001.xml">
<!ENTITY content SYSTEM "sections/content/c_xx_0001.xml">
<!ENTITY sidenav SYSTEM "sections/sidenav/sn_xx_0001.xml">
]>
<?xml-stylesheet href="shell.xsl" type="text/xsl"?>
<?cocoon-process type="xslt"?>
<apage>
&banner;
&sidenav;
&content;
</apage>
