Note that this isn't standard XSL(T)
(which uses xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" )
but the non standard language used in IE5. You might want to get the
Microsoft preview web release of MSXML3 to bring your XSL into line with
the standard W3C specification.
Certainly in XSLT and I think in the microsoft variant you shouldn't add
extra attributes there unless they are in a non null namespace.

IE5 does not have XSL variables but if you upgrade to use XSLT (or use a
different XSLT system) then
<xsl:value-of select="$varde"/>
would access the value of the varde variable, you would set its value
with
<xsl:variable name="varde" select="2"/>
