There is a solution, you can match the first occurance of an elment
using a test about its position just like:
<xsl:for-each select=".......">
<xsl:if test="position()='1'">
<.... Operations you have to apply to the first occurance ....>
</xsl:if>
..............
............
</xsl:for-each>
This is a mean you can try...
