<xsl:sort select="*[name()=$sort_by]" data-type="{$sort_type}"
order="{$sort_dir}" />

For the record, the *[name()=$sort_by] is a XPath query expression.
  It means, roughly, select all child nodes of the current node (the *),
  limiting them by (the [...] part) where the name of the node is equal
  to the value provided (the name()=$sort_by).
