Re: xsl:variable within xsl:choose. Why doesn't that work? And what does?

xsl:variable works inside xsl:choose in exactly the way it works
anywhere else: its scope is the containing element:
so in

       <xsl:when test="do a test">
		<xsl:variable name="aVar" select="when var"/>
	</xsl:when>

the variable is defined up to the </xsl:when>.

You are not trying to define different variable depending on a
condition, you are trying to define one variable, with a value which
depends on a condition. So it is more natural (and works) to give the
condition as the value to the variable binding:

<xsl:variable name="aVar">
  <xsl:choose>
 <xsl:when test="do a test">...
</xsl:choose>
</xsl:variable>
