You're in trouble. An XML parser will normalize space in attributes; this
will prevent you from getting what you want. Check out the XML Rec, section
3.3.3. The bottom line is, that your carriage returns will be replaced with
spaces ( ). The XSL Processor never even gets to see the line feed
character, much less preserve it.
It's the first time I've ever seen this requirement of attribute values,
though ... this is why there's xml:space for text content of elements.
Tortuous workarounds are possible, but they involve pre- and
post-processing your data with a non-XML-aware processor such as a Perl
script or such like.
