not too much

a) it's only twice as bad as < and not too many people have complained
   about that.

b) As with < you'd almost always be able to easily restructure your 
    query in terms of >> if it bothered you.

c) Anyone rash enough to use an XML editor to type their XSLT files
   instead of using emacs can presumably type << anyway.
