Good idea. I've sometimes thought that the reverse
(unicode-character-to-int()) would also be useful when creating
entities. So for example when serializing XML you could do something
like:

  <xsl:variable name="U" select="unicode-character-to-int($char)" />
  <xsl:choose>
    <xsl:when test="$U > 128">
      <xsl:text>&<xsl:value-of select="$U" />;</xsl:text>
    </xsl:when>
    <xsl:otherwise>
      <xsl:value-of select="$char" />
    </xsl:otherwise>
  </xsl:choose>

[Note use of xsl:text in XSLT 2.0 WD - can contain things other than
#PCDATA! :)]

Cheers,

Jeni
