well guessing whatyou mean by "." You coukd do
<xsl:sort select="root/person/supelogin/login"/>
If you want to pass the name of the sort element as a param, and only
want to use the eleemnts in supelogin you can do
<xsl:sort select="root/person/supelogin/*[name()=$$sortering]"/>
If you want to supply the full path as a param you are in the territory
of using saxon:evaluate()
